We started with how writing instruments should feel in the hand. Balance, comfort, consistency, durability, and duration guided every design decision long before materials are selected or machines are programmed. Precision manufacturing allows us to translate design intentions into repeatable, reliable objects.

Materials Chosen with Purpose

The materials that make up RIIND instruments are selected for performance. Weight, durability, surface finish, and aging properties over time all matter in products we stand behind.

Manufacturing Process

Raw Stock:

A perfect surface finish for our pen bodies starts with bar stock, ground to the final exterior dimensions. This ensures a spot-on final diameter and showcases a uniform surface finish.

Machining:

Metal parts are machined on Swiss Turning centers, which precisely combine turning and milling. Turning is the machining process where a lathe is used to rotate the material being cut against a static tool, while milling moves to tool against the stationary material. The complex geometry of our parts is made possible only with this combination.

Wire Bending:

The inspiration for the pen clip came from carabiners, where a wire gate is used to provide both latch and spring retention. Our clips are bent using CNC wirebender, which forms five precise bends on a single setup.

Wire Finishing:

Once the clip is completed, they undergo heat treatment to relax internal stresses created during their formation. Clips are mechanically polished to remove scratches and create a lustrous, shiny finish. The black clips then get a combination coating that includes one layer of Aluminum Titanium Nitride and a layer of Molybdenum Disulfide. These are durable, thin, physical vapor deposition coatings traditionally used on machine cutting tools to increase tool life. We selected these coatings for their aesthetic quality and their durability enhancement characteristics and have tested them in a rock tumbler to ensure this durability.

Anodizing:

Aluminum parts are anodized to both add color and increase the hardness and durability of the aluminum surface. Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts a very thin layer of the outside surface of aluminum into aluminum oxide. The anodized layer is porous, allowing it to be dyed.

Engraving:

Pens are laser engraved with the RIIND logo, and now can be optionally engraved with your initials, a name, a logo or a message.

Assembly:

Finally Pens are assembled with the aid of several installation fixtures, checked for proper operation and packaged, ready to send to you.

Built for Long-Term Use

RIIND instruments are made to be used daily. Refills are replaceable. Wear is expected. Aging is part of the design.

These are not disposable tools. They are meant to stay with you, developing character over time as they continue to support your work.
